Shierla & Hengky contacted me from Indonesia where they are currently based to arrange an Indonesian styled traditional pre-wedding photography session in Melbourne. They both studied in Melbourne prior to moving to Jakata, Indonesia and specifically wanted the photos in Melbourne to show the lovely lush green natural and beautiful settings in contrast to the smog covered busy city they live in.
The pre-wedding photography concept is all pretty new to me and appears to be very popular within the Asian culture. It’s basically like an engagement shoot only styled with a number of outfit changes, different locations, props and usually up to a full day’s shooting. I love this concept, and this shoot was so much fun and so exciting to have lots of props to play with and being able to style it. Nothing is too over the top when it comes to these shoots, the more colour, props and accessories the better! I just love this shoot and I am very keen to photograph many more like it!
I was very excited when they sent me a link to a similar styled shoot featured on the green wedding shoes website (which I love) and I immediately knew we had very common styles and this was a session I wanted to photograph! Shierla knew she wanted to get out of the city and after throwing around suggestions of Yarra Valley, Mornington and the Dandenongs, I suggested we settle on the Dandenongs which offer so many beautiful garden and natural forrest type settings that we would be spoilt for options.
Shierla & Hengky run the Kenzo store in Jakata and are lucky enough to get to travel to Paris fashion week to buy the new season’s ranges for the store each year. They are both very fashion forward and put a lot of effort into their styling and props to match the theme of each outfit. They get married in Bali in March next year, which is going to be an event of epic proportions with over 1000 guests! I hope to have them visit again after they’re married to do a post-wedding session in the cotton fields in NSW.
These two have been dating for over 11 years now and met each other during high school in Singapore. When Shierla’s best friend starting dating Hengky’s cousin they both accompanied them on their first date. From there, they kept in touch and their feelings grew.
With Shierla being quite shy and reserved, it was important to her to be able to relax and enjoy their photography session so their moments together could be captured in natural way. She wanted their photos to show that they are having fun and enjoying the session in a colourful, intimate and romantic way. The location and scenery played an important role in these photos as where they live currently, they don’t have easy access to these types of clean, green, natural park locations.
After our session Shierla and Hengky took us out for dinner to say thanks, and through our discussions we learnt a lot about where they live and their culture. Did you know there are no footpaths in the city of Jakata, so they have to drive everywhere! Even just down the road, and they have drivers to take them places. All attributing to the smog and pollution problem. Amazing!
